35 Metres Below Ground

Interlinked foundation beams rest on 78 piles driven deep into the ground.

Work on the Outpatient Building site of the New Dunedin Hospital is moving along, with pile caps in place that are essentially thick concrete mats which distribute the weight of the building across the foundations.

None of this could have happened without 'Hammeroid' (the pile driver machine) of course!

There are 78 piles in place which average 19m below ground, the deepest at 35m because the site is the old foreshore. This means the building is well anchored and significant testing has taken place to ensure it meets earthquake safety standards.

The first of the structural steelwork is scheduled to be installed mid-year.  Everyone will soon see what the height of the finished building looks like when the first columns are in place.

The bright yellow crawler crane will be doing the heavy lifting of the 26m tall steel columns required onsite. While the crane can lift up to 300 tonnes, the heaviest lift expected is 35 tonnes.

The Outpatient Building will open in 2026.
